1 2.1 Overview: Thin Sections and Thick Sections
Petrographic thin sections, or thin slices of polished rock attached to a glass slide, are used for a variety of analyses by geoscientists. The same basic steps have been used since the 1800's to create thin sections, but the technology and materials have changed.

A thin section is a slice of rock thin enough for light to pass through, so that it can be examined using a light microscope (see Light Microscopy). Thin sections are an essential part of geology, and especially important for studying rocks from other planets, such as the Dar al Gani 476 meteorite from Mars. Here is how a thin section is made:

Thin sections are slices of rock, mounted on glass, that are ground thin enough to transmit light. This allows microscopic examination of crystals, grains, fossils, and rock fabrics. Thin sections are of special value to three groups of paleontologists: 1) taxonomists studying groups whose classification rests on internal features or skeletal ...

A thin section is usually a rock, but may also be a soil, pottery, bone, or metal sample used in mineralogy and petrography. The material is cut with a diamond saw to turn it into an incredibly fine object mounted on a …
A Brief Introduction on Thin Section Preparation
Typically, a thin section is used to analyze a sample of rock, mineral, pottery, soil, bone, or even a piece of metal. A thin section is very beneficial when analyzing or assessing reservoirs. Both compositional analysis and textural analysis are possible using a thin section. Preparation. Preparing a thin section is a careful and exacting process.
Preparing a Thin Section of a Rock
A thin section of rock is prepared so mineralogists and petrologists can identify, study, and analyze the material more closely. This is known as thin section preparation. Using this method, you can classify minerals, identify problems in quarries or structures, examine mineral potential in geological environments, and identify the geographical source of …
